Q: In order to be in compliance, which training do I need to take and how frequently?
A: One of the following trainings is required to be taken by each University of California employee on an annual basis.
UC Ethical Values and Conduct Compliance Briefing: All non-research University employees are required to complete the UC Ethical Values and Conduct Compliance Briefing. The purpose of the briefing is to reinforce the Statement of Ethical Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct and provide information about reporting instances of non-compliance. The online briefing will be delivered to approximately 192,000 University non-research employees (faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, students).
UC Ethical Values and Conduct, and Conflict of Interest for Researchers Compliance Briefing: Researchers in specific title codes who have received extramural research funding in FY08-09, are required to complete the UC Ethical Values and Conduct, and Conflict of Interest for Researchers Compliance Briefing. The purpose of the briefing is to reinforce the Statement of Ethical Values and Standards of Ethical Conduct and provide information about reporting instances of non-compliance. In addition, this briefing will satisfy funding agency requirements to train researchers on conflict of interest in the research setting. The online briefing will be delivered to approximately 19,000 University research employees (faculty, staff, and postdoctoral scholars).
Q: Are all student employees required to take the Compliance Briefing?
A: Yes. All student employees are required to take the UC Ethical Values and Conduct Compliance Briefing for non-researchers.
Q: Are “without-salary” employees required to take the Compliance Briefing (i.e., emeriti faculty, adjunct faculty, vendors, volunteers, etc.)?
A: No. “Without-salary” employees are not required to take the Compliance Briefing at this time.
Q: By what authority are these briefings considered mandatory?
A: The Regental Office of Ethics, Compliance and Audit Services (ECAS) is the office responsible for requiring and developing the compliance trainings. Q: I never received or I lost the email with my link. How do I receive a new link?
A: Check your spam filter or your trash or junk mail box in your email program to make sure it wasn't filtered out of your in box. If you are unable to locate the email contact UCLearningCenter@ucop.edu.
New Employees: Please note, the briefings are administered by the Learning Management System which is a tool used to deploy online training to employees. It relies on accurate and complete data from the Payroll Personnel System (PPS) and the campus’ Telecom Interface to correctly identify employees who must take the training. Once email addresses are provided in the Telecom Interface, it will then be able to send new employees an email with a link to the appropriate training, reminder emails, and a completion email.
Q: By when do I have to complete the briefing?
A: The briefing must be completed by December 2010. After the December 2009/January 2010 rollout, University employees will be required to re-take the course each year, the exact date will be determined by the date they complete the course the previous year.
Q: How long does it take to complete the briefing?
A: The UC Ethical Values and Conduct Compliance Briefing will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The UC Ethical Values and Conduct, and Conflict of Interest for Researchers Compliance Briefing will take approximately 40 - 60 minutes to complete. Individual experiences may vary. The program will allow you to save and re-enter the training at a later time.
Q: If I only have time to do part of it, can I complete the rest later?
A: Yes, your online training course may be completed in more than one session. The course has a "bookmarking" feature, which will save your place should you need to leave the course and come back to it later. Once you are ready to continue with the course, simply open your course registration email and click on your personalized course link. Your course will open to the point where you previously left off.
