On July 16, 2009, the UC Regents declared an extreme financial emergency for UC, and approved a one-year systemwide furlough/salary reduction plan, effective September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010, as part of an overall strategy, built on a central principle of shared sacrifice, to address the fiscal challenges faced by the University of California.
