RE:       Minimum Wage for CA will increase to $10.00/hour on January 1, 2016

Governor Brown signed into law a new state minimum wage of $9.00/hour that took effect in July of 2014. Tied to this, a second minimum wage adjustment is also scheduled to take effect January 1, 2016 that will increase the state minimum to $10.00/hour.

In July 2014 with the new minimum wage law, the existing UCSC student salary structures collapsed into one classification and one salary range that encompassed all categories of student employment.

Current
State Min Wage = $9.00/hour

January 1, 2016
State Min Wage = $10/hour

4919, STDT 4
$9.00 – $25.00/hour

4919, STDT 4
$10.00 – $30.00/hour

Next Steps:

  1. System-wide PPS programming will take place in early December to increase the salary rates of student employees currently earning below $10.00/hour.
  2. The effective date of the increase for bi-weekly (BW) paid students is 12/20/15. Monthly (MO) paid students will be effective 1/1/2016.
  3. Students earning $10.00 per hour or greater will not be affected. If a department wants to adjust the pay rate for a student worker earning $10.00 per hour or more, contact your timekeeper (cc the Ops Supvervisor) to request the increase.
  4. New student salary rates will be updated on the Career Center website,http://careers.ucsc.edu/staff/policy.html.
  5. Any students hired or rehired after 12/20/15 (BW) or 1/1/16 (MO) will need to be compensated within the new salary range, at a minimum of $10.00 per hour, at the time of hire/rehire.

The wage increases will be unit-funded. No additional funding will be provided by the campus to fund this minimum wage increase. Departments planning to adjust student workers salary rates above the $10.00 minimum should submit requests to the Staff Human Resources Operations Unit.
