About the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI)
IMPORTANT NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY PARTICIPANTS: Participation in the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) is an essential part of the Leadership Academy curriculum. By submitting your application to the Leadership Academy, you are committing to complete the LPI Self-Assessment and to invite eight to ten others to complete the LPI Observer Instrument before December 21, 2011 so that results can be compiled and summarized for our two-day Leadership session in January.
The LPI 360° is a comprehensive leadership development tool created by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, authors of The Leadership Challenge. This 360-degree leadership assessment tool includes the LPI Self (completed by the Leader) and the LPI Observer (completed by others chosen by the Leader).
The LPI Self is a 30-item assessment instrument that provides a way for individual Leaders to measure the frequency of their own specific leadership behaviors on a 10-point scale.
The LPI Observer asks 8-10 people chosen by the leader to provide feedback on their perception of the leader’s frequency of behavior on the same 30 leadership actions. In addition, each observer has the opportunity to provide qualitative feedback on the leader’s strengths and weakness by answering four open-ended questions.
Observers typically include managers, direct reports, co-workers, or others with direct experience of the individual in a leadership role. With the exception of the manager (since most participants have only one), all observer responses are confidential. Each assessment is accessed online and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
The LPI has been used by hundreds of thousands of leaders worldwide since 1990 and is considered to be a highly valid and credible instrument. It is most often used in programs designed to develop leadership literacy and effectiveness in business, education, government and non-profit arenas.
