Dear Skilled Crafts Employees,
I am writing to provide an update on the contract negotiations between UC Santa Cruz and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) for the Skilled Crafts (K7) employees. As you know, the previous contract expired last October. We have been engaged in negotiations since last summer, and continue to work in good faith towards getting a fair and equitable new contract in place.
In an effort to preserve the sanctity of the negotiations process and to honor those specific discussions at the table with your union leadership, we cannot share details of the process, but will provide a general update as of the last negotiation session, which was held on January 11, 2024.
At the last negotiations session, campus management has shared proposals to your union leaders in the following three areas:
- Fair wages
- Shift differential
- Apprenticeship program
We are pleased that progress is being made and additional negotiation sessions have been proposed for February. Campus management will continue to be actively engaged with your union leadership and committed to finding common ground to achieve a new contract.
We will continue to provide appropriate updates after each bargaining session, which will also be available on the Collective Bargaining page of the Employee and Labor Relations website.
We deeply appreciate the work you do in supporting our campus and hope to finalize a contract in the months ahead.
Sincerely,
Kamala Green
