Re: 2011-12 Annual Call for Staff Performance Appraisals

The University carries out its mission through the individual and collective contributions of its employees. To do their best, staff members want to know that their contributions are recognized and acknowledged. A performance management system is necessary to engage and support staff. Performance appraisals are an essential component of performance management, and are required annually for all University career employees.

For the 2011-12 review period managers are requested to submit performance appraisals to their Staff Human Resources Employee & Labor Relations Analyst by Monday, August 27, 2012. Managers who are scheduled to leave for the summer months or who supervise staff on summer furloughs should complete the required forms in June in order to meet the August 27 deadline.

As the Principal Officer, you have an important role in strengthening the performance management program within your division by making this investment of time a valuable and rewarding process for both your managers and employees.  We encourage you to establish clear guidelines and expectations for performance appraisals within your division.  Your leadership will establish the approach your managers will take in developing their unit-specific performance management programs. This is an opportunity for you to foster positive change in specific areas of your organization, and to establish your overall goals and objectives for organizational performance.

Ideally, writing the performance appraisal is a positive, reflective process that comprehensively summarizes the discussions that have been ongoing between the supervisor and employee throughout the year. The performance appraisal process provides an opportunity to review past performance and to discuss goals, plan future work, and establish an employee development plan that supports job specific skills and career aspirations.

Staff Human Resources provides assistance and support to managers in completing performance appraisals:

  • Standardized appraisal forms are provided at:  http://shr.ucsc.edu.  Your division may choose to designate one or more specific forms to be used, depending on the job responsibilities for employees being reviewed.
  • Your Employee & Labor Relations Analyst can provide you advice, and assist you in writing performance appraisals.  We encourage consultation in advance of the official appraisal meeting with the staff member, particularly if performance issues exist.
  • Staff Human Resources will be providing classroom training for performance management skills on June 18 and July 11, 2012. Webinar training will be scheduled for August 2012.

For further information regarding the performance management process and the available training opportunities, please contact your Employee & Labor Relations Analyst.
