Dear Campus Community,

Thank you for doing your part to comply with our asymptomatic COVID-19 testing requirements this quarter. We appreciate your patience and understanding as our on-campus testing locations at Quarry Plaza and the Merrill Cultural Center have been extremely busy, each processing an average of 800 tests a day. This is welcome news in helping to keep our Slug community healthy as we near the asymptomatic testing deadline, which is this Thursday, Sept. 30.

We are reaching out today with a final reminder about the requirements for asymptomatic testing and providing information for our upcoming free flu vaccine clinics in October for faculty, staff, and students.

The Highlights

  • Testing Requirements: Vaccinated and Unvaccinated
  • On-Campus Testing Locations
  • Off-Campus Mail-In Testing
  • Flu Vaccine Clinics Coming in October

Testing Requirements: Vaccinated and Unvaccinated

For students, the following asymptomatic COVID-19 testing requirements must be met to access campus this quarter:

  • Vaccinated students living on campus must get a COVID-19 test within five to seven days of moving to UC Santa Cruz.
  • Vaccinated students who live off-campus must get a test by Sept. 30.
  • Unvaccinated students with a pending or approved exemption must continue to be tested every four days throughout the quarter, commencing with their arrival on campus.

For faculty and staff, testing is voluntary for vaccinated employees who live, work or come on-site for any reason. Unvaccinated staff and faculty who come on-site for any reason are required to test at least every four days.

For faculty, staff, and students who are 100 percent remote, testing is voluntary. You may take a test as often as desired. For faculty, staff, and students who are vaccinated, voluntary testing will be available at the testing kiosks after September 30. You may take a test as often as desired.

Please note that to meet campus testing requirements, you have to test at Merrill, Quarry or via the off-campus mail-in kit. Other off-campus tests will not be accepted.

Exception: Testing is not required for those who tested positive for COVID-19 in the past three months. You must upload your positive result to Health e-Messenger.

Off-Campus Mail-In Testing

If you cannot make it to campus before your testing deadline, you can request mail-in, at-home test kits through Fulgent Genetics.
To request a kit:
  • Check the website to see if you are eligible and order a kit.
  • Redeem the available gift code. A test kit will then be mailed to you.
  • Once you take the test, allow 24 to 48 hours for results.
  • If you are symptomatic, please contact the Student Health Center.

Flu Vaccine Clinics Coming in October

Help UCSC fight the flu! Faculty and staff are eligible for free flu vaccine shots on campus on Oct. 5 and Oct. 13. Please register for one of the flu vaccine clinics here. Students can also get flu shots on Oct. 27-28 at the Hay Barn. Registration details are coming soon. In the meantime, keep an eye on the Student Health Center’s immunizations page for more information.

It is imperative to comply with the testing requirements so that your access to campus services, such as dining, campus business services, advising, classes and labs, recreational facilities, libraries, transit, etc., will not be impacted.

The Slug Strong website has more information about our COVID protocols and return to in-person learning. For additional questions, please contact the COVID-19 Information Response Team at Someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your partnership.
