Dear Campus Community,
The recent severe weather we’ve experienced, both this month and at the start of the year, has had a devastating impact on our community and the surrounding areas. Sadly, torrential rains, high winds, and flooding have damaged many vehicles, homes and businesses, and displaced too many in our community, including students, staff and faculty. My thoughts are with all who have been adversely affected by these powerful storms.
While many are hurting and in need of our support right now, the people of Pajaro especially need our help and attention. The tight-knit Monterey County community sits just south of Watsonville, abutting the Pajaro River. Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to a levee break last week that has caused widespread flooding. Many of those displaced left their homes on short notice, are now staying at nearby evacuation centers and are in urgent need of clothing, hygiene products, food provisions, and more. It is unclear when it will be safe for them to return to their homes.
We are committed to helping students, staff, and faculty impacted by this flooding. The university has reached out to students from the Pajaro area offering support and campus resources. I encourage all Banana Slugs to support our neighbors in Pajaro – and all storm-impacted communities – through an outpouring of resources, generosity, and care. If you wish to get involved and give back to our community, there are a number of opportunities to do so. Several community organizations are leading efforts to collect donations, assemble volunteers, and raise funding for those impacted by the storms. Here are a few:
Volunteer Opportunities Second Harvest Food Bank is looking for additional people to help with food sorting. Volunteers are asked to sign up for shifts via this link.
The Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County is seeking flood response volunteers.
Donation Needs and Collection Sites Urgent Needs: Diapers, baby wipes, feminine pads, bath towels, warm blankets, new socks and underwear, bottled water, gently used clothing in good condition, and art and craft supplies for children. Food donations should be pre-packaged and non-perishable.
Collection Sites: Donations can be taken to the Raices y Carino center at 1205 Freedom Blvd., Unit 3B, in Watsonville between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily.
Monetary donations The Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County and Community Foundation for Monterey County are receiving general flood-relief donations.
Casa de la Cultura Center runs free clinics and provides living assistance directly to Pajaro farmworkers and their families.
Agri-Culture is accepting donations to help the farmworkers. Please indicate if your donation is for disaster relief of farmworkers.
This is a challenging, uncertain time for many in our community – and has been since the first series of severe storms hit our Central Coast in January. I’m immensely grateful for the many ways our university family has come together to lead us through the storms and navigate their aftermath. Let us unite once more in support of one another and to uplift those most in need.

Las recientes tempestades severas que hemos pasado, tanto este mes como a principios de año, han tenido un impacto devastador en nuestra comunidad y las áreas circundantes. Lamentablemente, las lluvias torrenciales, ventoleras e inundaciones han dañado a muchos vehículos, hogares y negocios, y desplazado a muchos de nuestra comunidad, inclusive estudiantes, personal y facultad. Mis pensamientos están con Uds. y con todos los que se han visto afectados adversamente por estas potentes tormentas.
Si bien hay muchos que están lastimados y en necesidad de nuestro apoyo en estos momentos, la gente de Pájaro necesita sobre todo nuestra ayuda y atención. La muy unida comunidad del Condado de Monterey se halla justo al sur de Watsonville, colindante con el Río Pájaro. Casi 2,000 personas han sido evacuadas de sus hogares debido a la rotura de un dique la semana pasada que ha causado inundaciones generalizadas. Muchos de los desplazados que dejaron sus hogares con premura ahora se encuentran en centros de evacuación cercanos y necesitan ropa, artículos de higiene, provisiones de alimentos y más. Se desconoce cuándo podrán regresar con seguridad a sus hogares.

Los donativos de alimentos deben estar pre-envasados y ser imperecederos.
Sitios de acopio: Los donativos podrán llevarse al Centro Raíces y Cariño en el 1205 Freedom Blvd., Unit 3B, en Watsonville, a diario entre las 10 a.m. y las 6 p.m.

Esto es un reto, un momento de incertidumbre para muchos de nuestra comunidad – y así lo ha sido desde la primera serie de tormentas severas que azotaron nuestra Costa Central en enero. Estoy inmensamente agradecida por las muchas formas en que nuestra familia de la universidad se ha unido para llevarnos adelante a través de las tormentas y navegar tras el paso de estas.
